China’s Basketball Girl Becomes A Champion Swimmer- An Inspiring Story Of Courage And Determination
Meet Qian Hongyan from Yunnan, south west China. She went on to become the face of disability in the year 2005. Today she is an inspiration for many. Back in year 2000, Qian lost both her legs in an accident. The poor girl had nearly lost her life but fate had it the other way. Her legs had to be amputated and she was left as a legless child. But “determination” and “courage” are the words that define Qian. The basketball girl of China is now a champion swimmer .
They Were A Poor Family Of Silk Farmers
Post her accident, Qian discontinued her studies. Her family was extremely poor. They were a family of silk farmers earning meagrely. Everyone noticed Qian had difficulty in moving because of her amputated legs. One day, her grandfather cut up an old basketball and fixed it at the bottom of her abdomen. The basketball replaced her lower body. She learnt to walk with the help of her hands with the basketball as her bottom half. She used wooden pads with handles to support herself while she used her hands to walk. And thus, she got the name Chinas Basketball Girl.
Qian could now walk and play with her friends. When she got tired it was easy for her to rest on the basketball that supported her lower body. In year 2007, she realised that she had no future in studies. It was then she started to learn swimming and she was an excellent at the sport. In 2005, Qians inspirational story became the talking point in Chinas media world.
Donations From Across The Word Helped China’s Basketball Girl Realise Her Dream
Qian was 10 years old when she got help in the form of donations from several people who were willing to help her. With the money she was then able to travel to Beijing. She got her first pair of prosthetic legs. With her story of despair and courage gaining popularity, she got another help from donations. She was able to join school again and complete her primary education. Finally, she faced reality that her family was not in a position to let her continue her studies after age 11. The brave-hearted Basketball Girl of China set out to make her own destiny.
Qian Is An Excellent Swimming Champion And Has Won Several Medals
Back in her hometown, she joined a local swimming club for the disabled. It was difficult. With such a high amputation she found difficult to float in water, she would choke most of the time. But she did not give up. Within a few months, she was participating and winning several national competitions.
In 2009, Qian won two silver medals and one gold medal in the Chinese National Paralympics Swimming Competition. In 2010, she won three silver medals again at the same competition. And her winning journey continues to be an inspiration of thousands of folks around the world. She went on to win more medals at several other competitions.
